Protections are in place to keep the manatees safe


It normally starts this time of year: propelled by the drop in temperatures, manatees seeking warmth come by the dozens to the heated waters near the TECO power plant in Apollo Beach.

“It’s interesting,” said Salima Rael, one of the many people who showed up to TECO’s manatee viewing center Wednesday. “All those humps in the water. I’ve never seen so many in one place.”

It’s clear the latest cold snap has done its part to fill the TECO canal with sea cows, but wildlife enthusiasts are concerned later this season, herds could be deterred from theirĀ safe oasis.
